Background:
Printer Felix Harlan of Harlan & Weaver traced Bourgeois's hands to create this composition. A photograph was taken of the process. Bourgeois later used this photograph to create a 2008 photogravure, also titled "Hands," seen in Related Works in the Catalogue.
Curatorial Remarks:
The source drawing for this composition was done on the verso of the 2002 impression seen below in Related Works in the Catalogue.
Description:
Drypoint, with red ink and pencil additions
Inscription:
"Do Re Me Fa" (repeated) across composition (erased) and margin, pencil, artist's hand. Verso: "the house" upper left sheet, pencil, artist's hand.
State Changes and Additions:
Changes from state VII, in drypoint: more curving lines added to right side of left hand; nail of right hand's fourth finger reconfigured; and various contour lines reinforced overall.
