- Background:
- Printer Felix Harlan of Harlan & Weaver traced Bourgeois's hands to create this composition. A photograph was taken of the process. Bourgeois later used this photograph to create a 2008 photogravure, also titled "Hands," seen in Related Works in the Catalogue.

- The source drawing for this composition was done on the verso of the 2002 impression seen below in Related Works in the Catalogue.

- Drypoint, with red and black ink, and red crayon additions

- Changes from state II, in drypoint: right hand's thumb and nail, fourth finger and nail, and third finger's nail; left hand's thumb and nail; all reconfigured.
