Background:
The editioned State IV of this composition was published as a benefit for the Beyeler Foundation, Riehen/Basel, Switzerland.
Description:
Drypoint and engraving, with red gouache, blue watercolor, and black ink additions
State Changes and Additions:
Changes from state III in drypoint: widened and shaded the body.
Additions in blue watercolor: reinforced the platemark and darkened the corners, anticipating selective wiping in the edition.
Additions in black ink: added a black dot inside the bottom coil of the snake.
Artist’s Remarks:
Inscribed on the verso of the source drawing: "Patte Cassée / Broken leg. / Friendly Spider: The snake curled around one of its leg and sits there. Sept."
