- Description:
- Drypoint and engraving, with red and black ink and blue watercolor additions
- State Changes and Additions:
- Changes from state II in drypoint: extended and widened the legs, rounded the body, and added a head.
Additions in red ink: filled in and widened the body, anticipating state IV.
Additions in blue watercolor: reinforced the platemark and darkened the corners, anticipating selective wiping in the edition.
Additions in black ink: added a black dot inside the bottom coil of the snake. - Artist’s Remarks:
- Inscribed on the verso of the source drawing: "Patte Cassée / Broken leg. / Friendly Spider: The snake curled around one of its leg and sits there. Sept."
